Southwest Contemporary Announcement

When Black Holes Collide (2021), ink and colored pencil on antique ledger paper (dated 1889), 12 1/4 x 7 3/8 inches. Artist Collection.

I am very pleased to share with you all an exciting project I had the honor of contributing ledger drawings to. Corey Gray (detector operator at LIGO’s Hanford Observatory in Washington) and his mother Sharon Yellowfly, both from Siksika, are doing amazing work that involves physics, Einstein, colliding black holes, gravitational waves, and Blackfoot language.

Sharon translated the 2015 LIGO press release announcing the first detection of gravitational waves into Blackfoot, as well as developed new Blackfoot words to describe some of the observations. Einstein’s theory of relativity is piisaatsinsiimaan (beautiful plantings) and gravitational waves is apootookspiisiiya otoh’kimskass (stick together waves) are a just few of the words she assisted with. My works are visual interpretations of gravitational waves/ripples and colliding black holes. Thank you Symmetry Magazine for having my artwork accompany this fantastic article.
